The International Day of Indigenous Peoples is celebrated worldwide on August 9. It was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1994.

There are 8 ethnic groups living in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Taimyr and Evenkia - Dolgans, Evenks, Nenets, Yakuts, Ketas, Nganasans, Selkups, and Ents.  Today, a large program dedicated to the International Day of the KMN has started in the regional center in the House of Friendship.

During the opening ceremony, Sergey Ponomarenko, First Deputy Governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Head of the Administration of the Governor of the region, congratulated on behalf of the head of the region on the International Day of Indigenous Peoples.

"Representatives of 160 nationalities live in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. Eight indigenous peoples of the Krasnoyarsk Territory are full members of our large multinational family," Ponomarenko said.  - Traditionally, when forming the regional budget, we allocate quite large funds to support indigenous peoples. It is fundamentally important for us to preserve the culture, way of life, and traditions of the peoples' art."

The First Deputy Governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory thanked the UN Representative for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Rashid Aluash for the opportunity to share this holiday together on the Krasnoyarsk territory, and also expressed gratitude to the regional association of KMNS, SFU and Norilsk Nickel, which provides assistance and support in holding this holiday in Krasnoyarsk.

Timur Tsybikov, Head of the Department of State Policy in the Field of Interethnic Relations of the Federal Academy of Sciences of Russia, noted that the protection of the traditional way of life of indigenous small peoples and the economic activities of these peoples has been declared an unconditional priority of the state national policy.

He stressed that in the Krasnoyarsk Territory there are good practices of interaction with the CMNS.

"This activity is carried out in very close cooperation with business, with industrial companies that operate in the region," Tsybikov said. - For example, with the company Norilsk Nickel, which is engaged in resettlement programs, is building new housing for representatives of small peoples. These are the examples that show a pattern of interaction, including for other subjects of the federation."

Rashid Aluash, responsible for the program of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights under the UN system in the Russian Federation, noted in his speech: "Of course, the main goal is to promote the rights of indigenous peoples directly. Because indigenous peoples today play a very, very important role precisely in front of those challenges, in front of humanity, that we know today."

Mining and Metallurgical company Norilsk Nickel is a long-time partner of KMNS and, of course, could not ignore today's holiday.

As noted by Anfisa Nikiforova, head of the department for work with indigenous peoples of Taimyr of the Polar branch of Norilsk Nickel: "Today there are many support measures that are being implemented by the authorities of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, and Norilsk Nickel is also trying to keep up with this issue. There are a number of measures implemented both on the territory of Taimyr and on the territory of Krasnoyarsk, which are primarily aimed at preserving traditional economic activities and preserving the culture of indigenous peoples."

In the House of Friendship, the guests of the holiday were able to see unique products made by the hands of representatives of the KMNS, as well as a digital plague.

Folk artists from Taimyr and Evenkia, as well as a guest from Ecuador, Alpa Giovani, performed on stage in front of the audience. As part of the festive events, a Festival of ethnic culture and arts of indigenous peoples was held on the Yenisei Embankment.
