The Chinese leader will join the leaders of the Group of 20 members and the heads of international and regional organizations via video link.
The summit’s aims are to develop and endorse the "Rome Declaration" of Principles, which can provide a powerful guide for further multilateral cooperation and joint action to prevent future global health crises, as well as a shared commitment to building a healthier, safer, fairer and more sustainable world.
The participants will discuss the situation with the intensification of efforts to combat COVID-19, as well as global cooperation in the context of the pandemic.
Xi Jinping will deliver a speech at the event, which will be held at the Villa Pamphili in Rome.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said China expects the summit to signal support for multilateralism and strengthen solidarity and cooperation in the global fight against the pandemic.
China hopes that the summit will fully strengthen the role of the G20 in responding to global crises and allow the platform to continue to actively lead international cooperation in the fight against the pandemic.
Since the outbreak began in late 2019, China has strongly advocated international cooperation in the fight against COVID-19. In addition to providing medical equipment and supplies to other countries, it has also committed to making vaccines developed in China available for the public good of the world.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said in a message posted on the summit's website that it "will provide a timely opportunity to share the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic."
"We will discuss how to improve health security, strengthen our health systems and improve our ability to deal with future crises in a spirit of solidarity," Mario Draghi said.
