The A. V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center for Marine Biology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is currently preparing for research, Mordukhovich said. Now scientists are working closely together in the field of studying coastal ecosystems.
In 2023, experts from the two countries began discussing the joint preparation of deep-sea projects. The expedition agreement for 2024 was signed with the Institute of Deep-Sea Research and Engineering in Sanya, Hainan Province. An international team of specialists will travel to the Kuril-Kamchatka and Aleutian trenches.
For Russian scientists, this will be the first experience of working at a depth of more than 9 km. Previously, specialists from the Russian Federation used domestic Mir devices capable of diving only to a depth of 6 km.
