The statement was made during the 17th working meeting of the US and Chinese defense departments, held on January 8-9 in Washington. The representative of the People's Republic of China demanded that the United States comply with the principle of "one China", stop supplying weapons to Taiwan and oppose its independence.
A publication posted on the Chinese Defense Ministry's WeChat page on Wednesday also stated that China calls on Washington to cease operations in the South China Sea and abandon support for provocations by certain countries in the region.
Since 1949, Taiwan has been governed by its own administration, but according to the position supported by most countries, it is considered one of the Chinese provinces. The United States severed diplomatic relations with the Taiwanese side in 1979 and established them with the PRC, and therefore are obliged to comply with the principle of "one China," the Ministry of Defense of the People's Republic of China stressed.
