The main purpose of the conference was to create an international platform for cooperation and scientific exchanges in the protection and conservation of, in particular, tropical forests in Hainan Province. During the discussions, it was noted that the provincial authorities in recent years have taken a set of measures to preserve the tropical forest and the biological diversity of species in it. The participants proposed to create a special structure that would allow solving relevant issues more effectively at the international level
According to the conducted research, there are over 3.6 thousand species of vascular plants belonging to 220 families in the tropical forests of Hainan. Of these, 428 species are found only on Hainan. From 2019 to 2022, at least 28 new species of wild animals and plants were found in them.
Scientists have found that each hectare of Hainan rainforest is able to absorb up to 2 tons of carbon per year. At the same time, this indicator increases by an average of 3-4% per year as new plants grow. All this will also play a role in achieving the goal of carbon neutrality.
The National Rainforest Park was officially established on October 12, 2021. Over the past year, the authorities have adopted a package of measures to preserve biodiversity in it. One of the most striking examples of successfully done work can be considered the preservation and increase of the Hainan gibbon population. Local authorities also have international projects for cooperation in the protection of Hainan rainforests.
