Canada has abandoned the idea of a free trade agreement with China

Канада

Ottawa does not intend to conclude such deals with China because of its obligations under the agreement with the United States and Mexico.

Canada has no plans to sign a free trade agreement with China. This was stated by Prime Minister Mark Carney, stressing that such steps would be contrary to Ottawa's current trade obligations.

According to the head of government, the refusal concerns not only China, but also other "non-market economies." Carney explained that the relevant restrictions are fixed in the trilateral trade agreement between Canada, Mexico and the United States. Earlier, US President Donald Trump warned that in the event of a similar deal, Washington would impose 100% duties on Canadian products.

At the same time, in January, Canada and China announced the beginning of a strategic partnership in the economic sphere. As noted by the Canadian media, during his visit to China, Carney called China a more predictable trading partner than the United States, and Ottawa made a number of trade concessions, including reducing duties on imports of Chinese electric vehicles and resolving individual trade disputes.
