In January, air carriers canceled 2,195 flights between China and Japan, which is 40.4% of the previously planned volume, Yicai reported. The total cancellation affected 46 destinations for the next two weeks.
The largest number of cancellations occurred on routes connecting Chinese cities with Japanese Osaka and Nagoya, which are traditionally among the busiest destinations between the two countries.
According to a Kyodo news agency survey, the majority of Japanese residents believe that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's statements about Taiwan, which provoked a negative reaction from Beijing, had a negative impact on the economy. The harsh statements were followed by diplomatic demarches, and the Chinese Foreign Ministry also warned Chinese citizens against traveling to Japan.
