Chinese experts recorded 3,153 new cases of chikungunya virus infection in the south of the country between September 21 and 27. According to the regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the outbreak has occurred in the southern province of Guangdong, where there is an increase in the number of infected people.
The vast majority of cases — 2,927 people — were identified in the Jiangmen City District. The remaining cases were registered in Guangzhou, Foshan, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and other cities. The authorities warn that during the national holidays, when the population is actively moving around the country, the risk of spreading an infection carried by mosquitoes increases significantly.
Compared to a week earlier, when 2,426 cases of the disease were detected in Guangdong, the number of infected has increased significantly. Jiangmen, home to about 5 million people, has introduced a third level of health response. Local authorities have stepped up measures to eliminate the virus vectors in order to reduce the spread of the disease.
