Currently, more than 56,000 Chinese citizens study at Russian universities, and more than 21,000 Russian students study at Chinese universities. Over the past two years, the number of applications from Chinese citizens to study in Russia has doubled, while Russian applicants are also actively choosing universities in China. They receive hundreds of grants and scholarships from the Chinese government every year, which increases their interest in studying in a neighboring country.
The two countries are already implementing over 200 joint educational programs, including bachelor's, master's and specialist courses. An important example of such cooperation is the MSU–SPI University in Shenzhen, established in 2017. Additionally, MSU is working with Peking University to launch an Institute of Fundamental Research that will focus on mathematics, physics, chemistry, and life sciences.
Intergovernmental agreements on cooperation in the field of education and on mutual recognition of diplomas are in the final stages. These documents should give a new impetus to the development of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the field of science and higher education.
