Leading universities in China will conduct research in the vicinity of Norilsk

Норильск

The research will be conducted at landfills in the Norilsk industrial district.

The staff of the Polar University, together with specialists from the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, the Second Institute of Oceanography and MSU-PPI, a joint Russian and Chinese university, will conduct research at landfills in the Norilsk Industrial District, in particular, at the Krasnye Kamenny waterfall, near the Mechta campsite, on the Yamnaya River, in Oganera, Kayerkan.

As the rector of ZSU Arkady Tarasevich noted: "There are unique research facilities in Norilsk. Now we are establishing contacts with partners who can explore our research facilities at the highest global level. The delegation was very representative, these are the leading research institutes in China. They have powerful laboratories and the best instruments for isotopic analyses of air, water and soil."

Vladislav Isaev, a professor at Moscow State University in Shenzhen, emphasized that a team from Guangzhou, from the Geochemical Institute, had arrived in Norilsk. "This is the best institute in China, they have two key laboratories, advanced technologies that do not require huge samples. They also have a huge number of other methods," he said. – The most important thing is that they are interested in not transporting samples from Russia to China to do research there. They are ready to set up such laboratories here.: both in the study of these particles and in the study of organic carbon in various forms."

The aim of the second Oceanographic Institute's research is to understand how chemical elements accumulate in the Arctic seas, and to link this with river runoff, especially with the discharge of organic matter from rivers such as the Yenisei. "Their task is to prepare the work for the next year in order to conduct research as efficiently and financially soundly as possible. The university will submit an application in December, and next year a team of specialists with new equipment will be invited, which will significantly improve the quality of regional research," Vladislav Isaev emphasized.

Norilsk Nickel supports such activities and is interested in a broader study of what is happening in the Norilsk industrial district.

"The arrival of two leading Chinese universities is a landmark event. I hope that it will develop into the very cooperation that we are all talking about now," said Giorgi Kunchuli, Director of the Diagnostics Department of the Polar Branch of Norilsk Nickel. "Given the technical base that our colleagues have, I suspect that these studies will take place faster."

In addition to scientific work, members of the Chinese delegation will also get acquainted with the unique nature of the Arctic. They will visit the Putorana plateau and take a tour of the Yenisei.
