China has developed a method of brain cell transplantation to combat depression

Депрессия

China has developed a technique for converting stem cells into dopaminergic neurons and shown that their transplantation can alleviate the symptoms of depressive behavior in animals.

Chinese researchers from the Academy of Sciences at Fudan University, together with UniXell Biotechnology, have created a technology that allows turning human stem cells into neurons similar to A10 cells, a key subtype of dopamine neurons responsible for pleasure and motivation. These cells, after being transplanted into the brains of mice, showed properties similar to natural neurons.

In animal experiments with depressive behavior caused by chronic stress, the transplanted cells helped reduce anxiety and feelings of detachment, as well as enhanced reward-related responses. This effect, according to scientists, turned out to be comparable to the effect of traditional antidepressants.

The authors of the study note that the data obtained provide conceptual evidence of the promise of cell therapy for the treatment of mental illness. The development may become the basis for new methods of combating severe depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders.
