Since April 12, China has been increasing duties on American goods from 84% to 125%. This decision was made in response to the actions of the United States, which, according to Beijing, violate the basic economic principles and rules of international trade. The Chinese authorities emphasize that Washington's behavior undermines not only bilateral relations, but also the global stability of the trading system.
The State Council's tariff committee said in a statement that the US tariffs represent "unilateral measures of intimidation and coercion" incompatible with international standards. The Chinese side believes that the country's market is no longer able to accept American products at the current level of duties. The Chinese authorities call such actions not only unfair, but also economically impractical in the context of global interdependence.
Beijing has warned that it does not intend to take into account further US tariff steps and will act solely within the framework of its own trade strategy. All further decisions on economic relations with the United States will be made in accordance with the policy approved by the Tariff Committee. The Chinese authorities have declared their readiness to defend their interests to the end, including tougher retaliatory measures in case of further escalation.
