Microbiologists have discovered bacteria in Hong Kong that feed on alcohol from antiseptics

This was reported by the press service of Xi'an Jiaotong University of Liverpool (XJTLU).

A group of scientists, which includes Chinese and American experts, has discovered a previously unknown strain of bacteria. Microorganisms are able to tolerate the action of antiseptics and feed on the molecules of alcohols and ammonia contained in their composition.

XJTLU associate Professor Tong Xinzhao said that thanks to this, microbes can survive even in the absence of access to food resources, unlike other bacteria in an urbanized environment, the university's press service reports.

To obtain this information, the scientists collected 738 samples from different surfaces from different regions of Hong Kong. After deciphering the structure of the genomes of microbes, experts discovered more than 360 strains of bacteria that were previously unknown to science.
